The Milwaukee Panthers' 2004-05 basketball team, which made a surprising run to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16, is set to be honored on February 16 during a game against Northern Kentucky at the UWM Panther Arena. This commemoration comes two decades after the team captured national attention and sparked enthusiasm in Milwaukee.
Joah Tucker, a former player now involved with the Panther Future Fund, reflected on the passage of time since that memorable season. "I'm 41, so obviously half of my life has gone by," he remarked. Adrian Tigert, another key player from that era, emphasized the team's camaraderie. "We just clicked on the court and off the court," he said.
Under Coach Bruce Pearl's leadership, known for his strategic play-calling abilities, the Panthers had an impressive season despite some mid-season challenges. Pearl praised his players' chemistry and individual talents: "Joah, Ed and Boo...could win their matchup every night."
The team's success in the Horizon League Tournament secured them an NCAA bid where they defeated higher-seeded teams like Alabama and Boston College before losing to Illinois in the Sweet 16. Pearl highlighted how their games transformed their home court into a formidable venue: "The Cell became the hottest, toughest mid-major environment in college basketball."
Reflecting on their achievements, Pearl stated, "I think the big thing is we belonged." The Panthers' story remains an inspiring chapter in college basketball history.
