The Milwaukee women's basketball team began the new year with a decisive 75-50 victory over Wright State at the Klotsche Center. Kamy Peppler led the Panthers with a double-double, recording 11 points and a season-best 11 assists. Kacee Baumhower added 18 points, while Jorey Buwalda contributed 12 points and eight rebounds.
Milwaukee excelled in ball movement, with 20 assists on their 25 field goals and made a season-high of 13 three-pointers. The team shot 45.5% from the floor and an impressive 44.8% from beyond the arc.
Head coach Kyle Rechlicz commented on the team's performance, stating, "We had been shooting pretty well this week in practice, and it was nice to see that carry over to the game tonight." Rechlicz also praised Peppler's play against Wright State's defense: "Kamy was huge against their zone defense and made the right passes and made some great decisions when we needed her to."
Defensively, Milwaukee registered nine blocks and six steals but struggled somewhat with rebounding as Wright State out-rebounded them 44-41, including securing 21 offensive rebounds. Rechlicz expressed some disappointment in this area: "The only thing I was disappointed in was not getting rebounds."
Wright State initially led with a 7-2 advantage before Milwaukee took control following consecutive three-point shots by Jada Donaldson and Peppler. The Panthers maintained their lead for the rest of the game, going into halftime up by 20 points.
In addition to strong performances from starters, Milwaukee benefited from its bench players who contributed significantly to their win with 28 bench points compared to Wright State's eight.
For Wright State, Amaya Staton stood out with an impressive showing of her own, scoring 18 points and collecting 11 rebounds.
Milwaukee will host Northern Kentucky next at home on Saturday afternoon.
