Milwaukee women's track & field excels at Panther Tune-Up ahead of league championships

The Milwaukee women's track and field team hosted the Panther Tune-Up on Saturday, marking the end of their indoor regular season. Anna Szepieniec delivered an impressive performance, winning the long jump with a leap of 5.97 meters, which is now the second-best in program history.

Head coach Andrew Basler commented on the team's performance: "We didn't have our full team competing today, but the ones that did took a great step forward."

Morgan Pilate excelled in the triple jump, achieving a distance of 12.48 meters and securing fourth place on the all-time list. Olivia Busch also performed well, finishing third with a jump of 11.79 meters.

Basler expressed optimism for upcoming events: "Olivia and Morgan have both really set themselves up to have a special weekend at the championships next week."

In other events, Olivia VanZeeland won the high jump by clearing 1.68 meters, while Claudia Conner secured first place in shot put with a throw of 12.02 meters.

On the track, Lilly Wepking claimed victory in her race with a time of 7.83 seconds. Brooke Crosby topped the 60m hurdles at 8.91 seconds, joined by Katie Sciarini who finished third at 9.22 seconds.

Leah Handshoe triumphed in the 400m dash with a time of 1:00.99, and Kalea Weyenberg won the 200m dash clocking in at 25.96 seconds.

Hailey Soriaga led in pole vaulting by clearing 3.65 meters to take second place.

Ally Schmitz was notable in the 800m run with a time of 2:20.18.

Coach Basler concluded his remarks saying, "Overall, I'm extremely excited and confident for this team as we head to the league championships," adding that he believes both teams will be contenders for trophies.

The Panthers are preparing for next weekend's Horizon League Indoor Championships scheduled for March 1-2 at Lutheran Health Fieldhouse in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
