DETROIT – Detroit Mercy's women's basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Barbasol Horizon League Championship after defeating Milwaukee 73-62 in the first round. The Titans executed a decisive 14-0 run late in the fourth quarter, with key contributions from Myonna Hooper and Makayla Jackson, who scored six points each during this stretch.
Jackson ended the game with a team-high 25 points, while Hooper added 15. Kamy Peppler and Kacee Baumhower led Milwaukee's effort with a combined eight three-pointers. Peppler finished with 20 points and Baumhower contributed 15.
The game remained competitive throughout, with both teams tied at 29 points at halftime. Milwaukee briefly held an eight-point lead before Detroit Mercy equalized by halftime. In the third quarter, Detroit Mercy gained a seven-point advantage and entered the fourth quarter leading 53-47. Hooper scored nine points and Jackson eight as Detroit shot 71.4 percent from the field in that period.
Milwaukee managed to regain a two-point lead midway through the fourth quarter following Jorey Buwalda's layup and free throw. However, turnovers and missed opportunities allowed Detroit Mercy to embark on their decisive run, culminating in a commanding 71-59 lead. Despite Baumhower's late three-pointer bringing Milwaukee within nine points with just over a minute remaining, they could not recover.
Rebounding proved crucial for Detroit Mercy, who outrebounded Milwaukee 42-29 and dominated inside scoring with a 38-20 advantage in points in the paint.
Buwalda finished with nine points for Milwaukee, while Anna Lutz closed her career contributing nine points and seven rebounds. Jada Donaldson added five points and shared the team lead in steals alongside Peppler, both securing three steals each. Peppler also matched Lutz's four assists for team-high honors.
With this result, Milwaukee concluded its season at an overall record of 8-24 and a conference record of 5-15. Detroit Mercy improved to an overall record of 15-14 and will face Cleveland State on Thursday evening.
