The National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic (NDVWSC) will take place this year in Snowmass Village, Colorado. James McLain, Executive Director of the Zablocki VA Health Care System, expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, "The Winter Sports Clinic is a great opportunity for our Veterans to showcase their strength, courage, and determination." He added that it is a meaningful experience for participants who represent the Zablocki community.
Participants will engage in activities such as downhill skiing and sled hockey along with other adaptive sports. Approximately 400 disabled veterans are expected to attend, supported by around 600 volunteers and 200 sponsors. The five-day event is also known as Miracles on a Mountainside and provides opportunities for adaptive sports therapy. Activities include skiing, sled hockey, scuba diving, snowmobiling, and rock climbing.
The clinic is co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Disabled American Veterans (DAV), with additional support from corporate sponsors and individual donors. Since its inception in 1987 with 90 participants, the clinic has aimed to help veterans overcome physical disabilities and unseen wounds through adaptive sports. These activities are facilitated by world-class instructors and recreation therapists.
