U.S. Senators Ron Johnson and Rick Scott have reached out to the Social Security Administration (SSA) with concerns over financial mismanagement. As Chairmen of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations and the Special Committee on Aging, respectively, they addressed their letter to Acting Commissioner Leland Dudek.

The senators have sought detailed information on the extent of fraudulent or wasteful expenditure by the SSA. They emphasized the need for measures to safeguard taxpayer dollars and secure Social Security benefits for Americans who depend on this crucial program. Their call for action follows revelations in reports from the SSA Office of Inspector General (OIG).

A February 2025 report disclosed over $32 billion in improper payments between 2020 and 2023. These errors largely resulted from beneficiaries not reporting necessary information or payments made to deceased individuals. Additionally, a similar July 2024 report identified more than $71 billion in improper payments from the SSA between 2015 and 2022. This has highlighted an ongoing issue in the agency, prompting the senators to call for immediate rectification.
