The Milwaukee VA's Homeless Prevention Program is organizing a series of surge events aimed at supporting unsheltered veterans. These events will focus on proactive street outreach to identify and engage with unsheltered veterans, enrolling them in same-day interim housing programs, and assisting them in accessing permanent housing solutions.
Unsheltered homelessness poses a significant public health concern, affecting individuals who find shelter in unsuitable places. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) acknowledges the importance of extending its outreach efforts beyond traditional methods to address the needs of this vulnerable segment of the homeless veteran population effectively.
The Milwaukee VA’s initiative aims to make a direct impact on unsheltered veterans by emphasizing targeted support through these surge events. The Community Resource and Referral Center (CRRC) plays a key role by providing veterans who are homeless or at risk with comprehensive access to services that promote permanent housing, healthcare, career development, and benefits from both VA and non-VA sources. On-site service providers will offer immediate access to shelter and initiate permanent housing plans for attendees.
Services available during these events include same-day shelter and housing resources, showers, laundry facilities, and computer access. Walk-ins are encouraged to participate.
