The Milwaukee women's cross country team competed at the Phoenix Open in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Saturday, finishing fifth out of nine teams with a total of 115 points. The Panthers were close behind Michigan Tech, which took fourth place by a margin of 13 points.

Anelise Egge led Milwaukee and claimed first place overall, completing the race in 21:39.7—more than 10 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor. Egge was last year's Horizon League Female Athlete of the Year.

"It was great to see reigning Horizon League champion Anelise Egge let loose and take control from the beginning," said head coach Andrew Basler.

Janiyah Taylor finished as Milwaukee's second runner in 14th place with a time of 22:54.5. Rachel Helm and Anna Gallagher placed 32nd and 33rd, recording times of 23:15.2 and 23:17.1 respectively.

"As a whole, it was a good step forward in the right direction. As we progress through the season, the ladies will have to close that time gap between our first and fifth runners. I'm very confident they will continue to grow in that area as they stack together more training sessions," Basler said.

The team is scheduled to compete next at the Rumble at the Fort Invitational in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on September 20.
