Milwaukee VA Police Department plans celebration for retiring K-9 officer Atilla

Atilla, a 10-year-old Jagdterrier weighing 26.5 pounds, will retire from the Milwaukee VA Police Department at the end of September after serving since 2016. The Milwaukee VA Medical Center will host an open house to mark Atilla’s retirement on September 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Matousek Auditorium at its facility located at 5000 W. National Ave.

The event is open to the public and will feature light refreshments as well as visits from other working dogs in Milwaukee County.

“He’s an amazing dog,” said his handler, Milwaukee VA Police Sgt. Christopher Agnew. “He loves his job so much, and he’s the best partner I’ve ever had.”

Atilla’s primary responsibilities included detecting and deterring narcotics on campus and locating dementia patients. He also assisted local police agencies with school searches and traffic stops.

“We’re working every single day,” Agnew said, explaining that Atilla’s age and hip issues have led to his upcoming retirement. “Like anybody else, at the end of the day, he likes to go home and relax.”

The Milwaukee VA is considering acquiring another police dog but faces financial constraints. Those interested in supporting the K-9 program can contact the Center for Development and Civic Engagement by email at vhamiwvolunteerservice@va.gov or by phone at 414-384-2000, ext. 41803.

After retirement, Atilla will live with Agnew and his family, which includes five children aged between five and sixteen years old. “He’s great with kids and families,” Agnew said.
