The Milwaukee women's swimming and diving team began its season at IU Indy, facing three conference opponents over the weekend. The Panthers secured a win against Green Bay with a score of 197.50-137.50 but were defeated by Cleveland State (228-107) and IU Indy (224-113).
Head coach Kyle Clements commented on the early start to the season, saying, "We have never started our season this early, and this was a fun way to kick it off. This meet provided us so much, it provided us a chance to get to know our new team members, it provided us insight of where our fitness level is, and it provides us with goals moving forward."
Key performances came from All Conference honorees Maddi Hayashi and Gabrielle LePine. Hayashi won the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.17. LePine finished first in both the 100 breaststroke (1:03.95) and the 200 breaststroke (2:22.85), beginning her junior year on a strong note.
Sophomore Christiana Brooks won the 100 freestyle in 51.48 seconds and placed third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.64 seconds. In the 100 backstroke, Brooks finished third (56.77), while Mara Freeman took fourth place (57.57).
Other notable results included Natalie DiProspero finishing fourth in the 400 individual medley (4:36.81) and Grace Hudson placing fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:57.60). Catelyn Fonda also performed well, taking second place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:06.74.
In relay events, Noelle Bryan, LePine, Hudson, and Brooks earned second place in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.53. The group of LePine, Brooks, Freeman, and Hayashi finished third in the 200 medley relay at 1:44.52.
"Moving forward there is a lot of work to be done both in the pool and in the weight room, but was fun to see our full team together and racing," Clements said.
The Panthers will return to competition on Saturday, October 4 at Klotsche Natatorium for their Alumni & Intersquad meet.
