Children's Wisconsin recently introduced the Hero Wagon for young medical patients to be easily transported throughout the hospital.
The Hero Wagon is a custom-made Radio Flyer, according to Fox 6 Now.
"We only have wheelchairs and infant carriers," Child Life Specialist with Children’s Wisconsin Molly McCormick said, according to Fox 6 Now. "So that in between population for the toddlers all the way up to teenagers, we didn’t have anything that would comfortably fit them."
The Hero Wagon gives patients a chance to ride around the hospital in something besides a wheelchair, according to Fox 6 Now.
"Say our patient needed to slide out easily, we do have seatbelts because safety first and we would bring them out like that and let them stand short to the ground," McCormick said, according to Fox 6 Now. "This is nice for that toddler, preschool population where they're not getting out of a giant wheelchair and stepping down."
Fox 6 Now reports that the response has been positive so far and staff is hoping to add more wagons to what they already have.
McCormick told Fox 6 Now that the Hero Wagon "opens up a whole new opportunity for mobility in the hospital which is huge because more patients can get out of their rooms if they’re able to and explore some of our programming opportunities or just get a change of scenery which is huge for coping."
Children's Wisconsin is a member of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. The Network is a nonprofit that strives to help children and raise funds for 170 children's hospitals throughout North America.
"Since 1983, CMN has raised more than $5 billion nationally, most of which is donated a dollar or two at a time by caring individuals through its year-round efforts to help kids," CMN officials said. "Dollars raised locally stay local and benefit Children's Wisconsin. Over the past 30 years our CMN partners have raised more than $40 million for Children's Wisconsin."
