Fat Tuesday marked the end of Mardi Gras and signaled the beginning of Lent, and one thing that has become a tradition in the Milwaukee area is indulging in the sweet treats of King Cakes and Paczki.
Fox 6 reported that Brian Kennedy is the owner of Kurt Schulz Deli and Pastry Shoppe and every year he expects a huge Fat Tuesday crowd to eat his cakes. Not only is it a delicious doughy treat covered with powdered sugar on top, the Paczkis are also a tradition that honors the Polish heritage that is prominent in the city.
“Every year it seems I have to make more and more,” Kennedy told Fox 6. “This year I have a fair amount on order already, so I’ll be making probably, I’m guessing around 70-75 dozen.”
Kennedy also said that he had an order in for about 40 King Cakes. This is the fourth year the shop has sold Paczki and the first for King Cakes.
Kennedy added that a buttery, sweet dough is the key to a good Paczki. He said that the treat is one that is tasty, but it also can be messy, just as it is intended.
Kurt Schulz Deli and Pastry Shoppe is located at 8752 North Deerwood Dr. in Milwaukee, and it is open from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. For information about the shop log onto kurtschulzdeli.com.
