The Milwaukee men's soccer team faced a challenging match against Wright State, resulting in a 3-3 draw at Engelmann Stadium on Saturday. The Panthers initially took a strong lead with goals from Ryan Berghauer and Alejandro Martinez in the first half, followed by Alan Lopez's goal in the 56th minute, which seemed to secure their victory.
However, Wright State mounted an impressive comeback. They outshot Milwaukee 17-6 in the second half and scored their first goal at the 75:33 mark. Brayden Tester then scored twice within 28 seconds (83:43/84:11), securing a draw for the Raiders.
Milwaukee head coach Kris Kelderman expressed his disappointment with the outcome. "It definitely feels like a loss," he said. "We are up 3-0 after a really good performance and come out and get outshot and outplayed like they did … We certainly didn't manage that well."
The Panthers' offense showed promise early on, with Berghauer scoring his first collegiate goal off a corner kick from Daiki Kumakawa at 22:45. Martinez added another goal following an assist from Bienvenu Djunga at 36:11.
Despite nearly extending their lead just after halftime, Praise Ongwu's shot narrowly missed. However, Lopez capitalized shortly after to make it 3-0.
Nolan Meyer made his first collegiate start as goalkeeper for Milwaukee, delivering several key saves despite the late-game turnaround.
Wright State ended up leading in several statistical categories: total shots (22-13), shots on goal (10-5), corner kicks (6-5), and possession percentage (53%). Asher Ozuzu led Milwaukee with three shot attempts off the bench, while Tester's performance earned him five points for WSU.
Looking ahead, Milwaukee will play two road games starting with Northern Illinois for the LeWang Cup on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
