The Milwaukee Health Department has reported the presence of lead in two schools within the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) district. The findings were made at Golda Meir Lower Campus and Kagel Schools, while no lead was detected at the Milwaukee Academy of Chinese Language. Results for Maryland Avenue Montessori School are still pending.
Despite these findings, the health department has assured MPS that it is safe for students to continue attending classes in these buildings. "Milwaukee Public Schools will continue to collaborate with the Milwaukee Health Department to provide and share information with families and staff as it becomes available," stated MPS.
The district was initially informed about a lead exposure case at Golda Meir Lower Campus in early January. Following this, MPS began working with the health department to inform families and staff and started implementing recommended measures. These included cleaning and painting efforts while awaiting further assessments.
MPS maintains a comprehensive process for monitoring, maintenance, and abatement of lead contamination. This process is outlined in their Lead-Based Paint Compliance Program manual, which is available online. The district plans to adjust its procedures based on any new recommendations from the health department.
"Milwaukee Public Schools, along with the Milwaukee Health Department, wants to reassure you that it will take all necessary measures to keep buildings safe for students and staff," MPS communicated.
