U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) spoke on the Senate floor to promote his Eliminate Shutdowns Act, which aims to prevent government shutdowns by introducing two-week rolling continuing resolutions in the event of an appropriations lapse.
Johnson criticized the recurring budget impasses, stating, “Aren’t you getting sick and tired of these government shutdowns? The drama, the turmoil, the partisan bickering, and holding the American people hostage for demands of billions and billions of dollars for more spending we can’t afford?”
He added that public opinion is against such shutdowns. “The American people don’t like these shutdowns. They want them ended. We have a very simple bill, not partisan, that offers no advantage to anybody. It keeps the government open and gives appropriators time to do appropriating, appropriate those departments, and end all the chaos, all the turmoil, and all the games with people’s lives,” Johnson said.
Senator Johnson has served as Wisconsin's U.S. Senator since 2011 after winning elections in 2010 against Russ Feingold with 51.9% of the vote compared to Feingold's 47%. He was re-elected in 2016 by defeating Feingold again with a margin of 50.2% to 46.8%, and secured another term in 2022 by winning over Mandela Barnes with 50.4% versus Barnes' 49.4%.
