Deirdre “Dede” Barry was born on October 8, 1972, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She began in figure skating and speed skating before switching to cycling. She trained locally and raced in national events. Barry won six U.S. championship titles in cycling, including four senior and two junior titles. She competed internationally, earning two World Cup wins and two World Championship medals. In 2004, she won a silver medal in the Olympic time trial in Athens. Her early experiences in Milwaukee shaped her athletic career. She also participated in local racing events such as Superweek. Barry later co-led Mariposa Bicycles with her husband, Michael Barry. Her connection to Milwaukee remained important throughout her career, as the city was where she first competed in speed and cycling events. Barry’s achievements brought recognition to American women’s cycling while maintaining ties to her hometown. She served as an example for young athletes in Milwaukee and across the country.
