Various ties have been made between Milwaukee, Wisconsin and the Paralympic games, scheduled to be held from Aug. 24 through Sept. 5.
“Best of luck to all the Badger athletes competing in the @Paralympics,” Gov. Tony Evers recently tweeted. “We're rooting for you.”
A total of seven Badger state natives have signed up for the competition, including three University of Wisconsin (UW) alums, one of which will compete in swimming and two in wheelchair basketball. Along with three UW alums, one of which will compete in swimming and two in wheelchair basketball.
Jake Williams and Nate Hinze, both Paralympic athletes from the greater Milwaukee area, won gold together in 2016 for wheelchair basketball.
John Boie from Milton will also participate in the Paralympics for the first time following a silver medal win in the World Championships. Army veteran and La Crosse native Lia Coryel will also establish her presence in Tokyo, as well as veteran Hailey Danz, Joe Delagrave and Matt Lesperance. Various other competitors noted former training that took place in Wisconsin.
