Wisconsin Rep. Supreme Moore Omokunde argues nothing meaningful or useful can come from the state’s election investigation.
“Wisconsin elections are free, fair, secure and accurate,” Omokunde said in a post to Twitter. “The GOP-led 2020 election investigation is a $680,000 waste of taxpayer money aimed at arriving at a predetermined, conspiracy-driven conclusion. My Democrat colleagues and I do not stand for this.”
In all, GOP state lawmakers are now supporting three separate probes into the November 2020 election, including a wide-ranging investigation backed by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, an attempted "forensic audit" by Rep. Janel Brandtjen and a review by the state audit bureau that was ordered by the GOP-controlled state Legislature.
With a budget in the neighborhood of $700,000, Vos’ investigation is the most high-profile of the lot. At the state Republican convention this summer, Vos assured GOP voters the probe would delve into "shenanigans" that might have taken place during the election.
"We give you our word that we are doing everything we possibly can to uncover what occurred in 2020," Vos said at the time.
The review is scheduled to be finished by mid-October and Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman recently sent an email to local officials requesting that they retain 2020 election records.
Chair of the state Assembly Elections Committee, Brandtjen labels her probe a "forensic audit" and cites Arizona as a model.
Finally, the last election review, now underway, is being conducted by the state’s nonpartisan Legislative Audit Bureau. The Republican-controlled Legislature ordered the bureau to conduct the audit earlier this year and its finals are slated to be made public sometime this fall.
President Joe Biden won the state of Wisconsin by roughly 21,000 votes. Similar reviews are being conducted across the country, including in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan and Georgia.
