A group of Democratic Wisconsin legislators have introduced of package of bills on climate change.
There are 22 bills in the package, which is entitled, “Forward on Climate.”
“Yesterday, I was honored to join @LGMandelaBarnes, @RepGreta and the Climate Caucus to introduce a bill package that both combats climate change and sets a strong foundation toward climate and economic equity in Wisconsin,” State Rep. Supreme Moore Omokunde (D-Milwaukee) tweeted.
The legislation is "bold" Rep. Greta Neubauer (D-Racine) tweeted.
“It’s time for Wisconsin-centered climate action," she wrote. "We’ve got to take bold steps so that we can move #ForwardOnClimate!”
Addressing climate change can be job producer for the state, said State Sen. Melissa Agard (D-Madison).
“I was proud to join @RepGreta, @sensmithwi and other Dem colleagues to release the Forward on Climate Package – legislation aimed at addressing climate change in Wisconsin," she tweeted. "This package of 22 bills is designed to create family-supporting jobs, reduce inequality and fight climate change.”
The package would create a $10 million annual grant program for "critical weatherization" and energy updates in Wisconsin public schools, a summary published by Wisconsin Public Radion said. Legislation would also require the state school superintendent to develop "model academic standards" related to climate change to help teach about the subjects in elementary, middle and high school.
"Racial disparity Impact Studies" would be required for projects by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to assess impacts of air and water pollution on "vulnerable" communities, the summary said.
A "Complete Streets" program would "ensure that bike-ways and pedestrian paths are constructed in all new highway construction and reconstruction projects funded with state or federal money."
