The Milwaukee Brewers' Rowdy Tellez became the team's second consecutive player of the week as COVID posed a threat to the team's success.
The National League (NL) on Monday named Tellez, the Brewers' first baseman, as the league's player of the week. That was a back-to-back accomplishment for the team and a first-time achievement for Tellez, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Tellez has his numbers to name for the accomplishment, with a .321 batting average, 12 RBIs, and three home runs alongside an impressive game against the Cincinnati Reds, where he shot two homers in their 18-4 victory.
"What a week for Rowdy!" Bally Sports Wisconsin said on Twitter on Monday. "The second straight NL player of the week for the @Brewers spoke with @SophiaMinnaert about the recognition and his success. #ThisIsMyCrew"
Last week, Brewers' shortstop Willy Adams was named player of the week, making it one of only five times the Brewers received back-to-back honors; the last time occurred in 2004, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
"My confidence is always pretty high, regardless of whether I’m doing good or not," Tellez said. "I think the confidence, for me, comes not with numbers, but with consistent at-bats. The numbers are always going to keep you confident, but being able to get the numbers and the consistent, good at-bats ..."
Despite the achievement, the team is still grappling with issues behind the scenes due to new COVID cases. Over the weekend, outfielder Andrew McCutchen was put on the injury list after testing positive for COVID and experiencing symptoms on Saturday. As a power player on the team, McCutchen scored a run in Friday's game against the Braves, according to ESPN.
