Of the many ethnicities represented in Wisconsin districts, the most prevalent ethnic group among students enrolled in Milwaukee County districts in the 2022-23 school year were African American, according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

Of the 118,254 students attending Milwaukee County district schools, 33% were African American. White students were the second largest ethnic group among Milwaukee County's districts, making up 29.7% of the student body.

In the previous school year, African American students were also the most common group in Milwaukee County districts, representing 34.4% of the student body.

Glendale-River Hills School District had the most even distribution of races among county districts, which included 42.9% of white students, 32.7% of African American students, 9.9% of Hispanic students, 9.6% of multiracial students, 4.4% of Asian students, and 0.2% of American Indian students.

In the 2022-23 school year, the total number of students enrolled in school districts in the county dropped to 6.6% compared to the previous year.

The main offices of all districts mentioned in the story are located in cities associated with Milwaukee County.

According to the Nation's Report Card 2022 results, Black fourth-graders in Wisconsin scored an average of 40 points lower than their white colleagues in both Math and Reading.

Data also showed that Black students were three times as likely to fail the Reading test than white pupils in the state. The gap is even larger in Mathematics, with Black students failing five times more than white students.
