The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) has reached a significant milestone, becoming the second four-year public university in Wisconsin to be recognized as an Emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution. This status was achieved with a Latino undergraduate student enrollment rate reaching 15.4%, demonstrating UWM's commitment to enhancing access to academic opportunities.

"This milestone reflects UWM’s longstanding dedication to creating pathways for success for all students, particularly those from underrepresented communities," stated Alberto Maldonado, director of the Roberto Hernández Center and special assistant to the vice chancellor for Community Empowerment and Institutional Inclusivity. "Our commitment to inclusivity will only continue to grow as we work toward achieving full HSI status."

To achieve full Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) status, UWM would need a Latino undergraduate enrollment rate of 25%. In 2016, when Latino enrollment was just below 10%, UWM set this goal. Despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, Latino enrollment has steadily increased over eight years, reaching 15.4% by spring 2024.

Full HSI designation would make UWM eligible for federal funding that benefits students, faculty, and staff through grants supporting recruitment and retention efforts, faculty development, community outreach, and student services. Additionally, this designation would benefit Milwaukee by educating a diverse population and providing a pipeline of graduates who understand their local community.

The increase in Latino enrollment is attributed to Wisconsin's growing Latino population and intentional programming rooted in "servingness," addressing specific needs of Latino students and their families. Under the leadership of the Roberto Hernández Center and collaboration with various campus partners, UWM has become a premier destination for Latino students in the region.

UWM's dedication to the Latino community began in 1970 with the Spanish Speaking Outreach Institute's establishment, now known as the Roberto Hernández Center. For over five decades, UWM has prioritized access and support for Latino students. The continued efforts of the Chancellor’s Committee for Hispanic Serving Initiatives highlight UWM’s ongoing commitment to serving this community.
