Registration for Milwaukee Public Schools' Summer Academy is currently open, with deadlines approaching on Wednesday, May 15, for Session I summer classes for high school students and Friday, May 31, for Session II classes. The academy offers a wide range of courses for students from kindergarten through grade 12.
The summer classes will take place in June and July at selected schools across the city. In addition to standard subjects such as science, social studies, and world languages, students can also enroll in specialty courses designed to stimulate their imagination and teach them new skills.
Among the unique offerings are an introduction to podcasting course for grades 10-12 taught by an award-winning journalist and MPS teacher; Horizon Strings, a program for students interested in learning string instruments; Computer Apps in Art; Forensic Science; Bilingual Hispanic American Literature; Beginning Band/Beginning Orchestra; and STEM GL!TCH - a coding class where students design their own escape room.
For younger children from kindergarten to grade 8, a five-week Summer Academy exploration camp is available from June 24 to July 26. Through various activities, special programs, and field trips, participants will learn about arts, music, social studies, STEM subjects, reading mathematics and world languages. Some sites also offer services for Extended School Year (ESY), Montessori bilingual education and English as a Second Language (ESL). Breakfast and lunch are provided at all campsites.
Summer Academy also provides an opportunity for older students in grades 7 to 12 to catch up or get ahead academically by earning credits through accelerated learning. Dual enrollment courses are available so that these students can earn both high school and college credits.
Session I of the Summer Academy runs from June 13 to July 2 while Session II takes place from June 24 to July 25. All participating students receive breakfast and lunch along with Milwaukee County Transit System bus passes starting on the first day of Summer Academy.
The Summer Academy is free for Milwaukee residents. Detailed information and online registration are available on the MPS Summer Academy web page. For any queries, contact Extended Learning Opportunities at elo@milwaukee.k12.wi.us.
