September 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a period dedicated to celebrating the Hispanic American community and its history, achievements, and contributions to the United States in various fields including cultural, economic, and scientific.
Events will be held at schools across the district. Notably, South Division High School, known for having one of the state's largest secondary bilingual programs, will host an event on October 31.
The Milwaukee Public Schools' (MPS) main event for this observance is the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration scheduled for Saturday, October 12. The celebration will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at South Division High School located at 1515 W. Lapham Blvd.
This year's theme is "La música que nos une" (The Music That Unites Us). Various MPS schools will present cultural and educational displays followed by student performances featuring music and dance. Additionally, the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Steel Pan Band is set to perform around 11:45 a.m., and Milwaukee Recreation will offer free activities for children.
Milwaukee Public Schools provides opportunities for students to learn about Hispanic culture throughout the year through its Spanish immersion school, bilingual dual language schools, World Languages program, and other courses.
Hispanic Heritage Month continues through October 15.
