Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) will spotlight Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) from October 21 to 25, 2024. This initiative is part of the district's college and career planning efforts for students.
Throughout the week, various activities are planned to engage students in exploring college and career training options. A complete list of activities can be found at mpsmke.com/hbcuweek.
During the entire week, staff members are encouraged to wear HBCU and fraternity/sorority paraphernalia. On Monday, students should explore scholarships, internships, and other financial resources by visiting the United Negro College Fund and Thurgood Marshall Fund websites. Graduating seniors are advised to create their ID for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in preparation for when the application opens.
On Tuesday, students are encouraged to take a virtual tour of HBCUs and visit the HBCU webpage. Wednesday offers a UNCF Parent Workshop for high school students and parents; registration is available online.
Thursday's focus is on the UNCF Empower Me Tour for high school students, providing insights into colleges, financial aid, scholarships, and more. Finally, on Friday, students can learn about new opportunities by visiting websites of African-American Greek Letter Organizations that support scholastic achievement and equity.
