Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is participating in National School Psychology Week from November 11-15, 2024. This event highlights the contributions of school psychologists across the nation. The theme for this year, "Spark Discovery," emphasizes the role of school psychologists as both scientists and practitioners who encourage exploration and innovation within their communities.

School psychologists play a crucial role by collaborating with families, educators, and other professionals to create supportive learning environments. Their expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior aids children and youth in achieving success socially, emotionally, behaviorally, and academically.

Peter Faustino, PhD, President of the National Association of School Psychologists, remarked on the importance of relationships: “I would like us to remember the profound impact that positive, supportive relationships have in fostering growth and transformation.” He added that such connections can inspire curiosity and learning while opening new possibilities within schools and communities.

In Milwaukee Public Schools alone, 170 school psychologists are dedicated to helping students at all grade levels thrive academically and personally. They work closely with staff members, parents, community agencies, and other professionals to foster healthy educational settings. Additionally, they focus on strengthening ties between home, school, and community for all students.

The MPS School Psychological Services program has been nationally recognized for its quality. It received a proficient rating—the second highest—through the Excellence in School Psychological Services program by the National Association of School Psychologists. MPS was one of only four districts nationwide to earn this distinction and stands as the sole recipient in Wisconsin.

For further details about services offered by MPS school psychologists, interested parties are encouraged to visit the MPS Psychological Services webpage.
