Milwaukee Recreation’s Beulah Brinton Community Center is a hub of activity, offering diverse programs ranging from athletic classes for older adults to music lessons for all ages. At the center of these activities is Aimee Guzman, affectionately known as Ms. Aimee, who has become a key figure in the community since joining over a year ago.

Guzman focuses on creating inclusive spaces for children aged 1-7, fostering learning opportunities and social skills. Her understanding of community needs stems from her experience as both a mother and a former participant in Milwaukee Recreation’s programs.

“I wanted to come up with a wide assortment of programs so that if something didn’t seem like a perfect fit for a family, I would have other options for them,” Guzman said. “It didn’t mean that they didn’t fit in; it just meant that we needed to find a different program for them.”

Guzman's goal is to provide affordable access to children's programs citywide. She stated, “What I’ve noticed is that oftentimes there are programs out there, but so many people are priced out of them.” She appreciates Milwaukee Recreation's ability to offer varied options at reasonable prices.

This winter, Guzman will continue her play group programming at Beulah Brinton with classes such as Regulation Station and Sporty Sprouts. Each week features structured activities aimed at developing comprehension and teamwork skills through arts & crafts, dancing, reading, cooking, music, and sports.

Her efforts have visibly impacted the children attending her classes by enhancing their social and learning abilities. “I love having the opportunity to watch the kids grow,” Guzman expressed. “Seeing a kid that comes in nervous and reserved [and] blossoms into someone who could go into their K4 classroom with such personality and confidence.”

Joel Symons, supervisor at Beulah Brinton Community Center, acknowledged Guzman's significant influence: “It’s quite possible that for many of Ms. Aimee’s students, their first memory in life will be taking her class at Beulah Brinton Community Center.”

Parents express gratitude towards Guzman as she continues to aim for positive experiences similar to those she had with her own children through Milwaukee Recreation's offerings.

“I feel so lucky, and I’m really proud of the job that I have,” Guzman remarked. She hopes families will continue engaging with Milwaukee Recreation due to their early positive experiences.
