A vibrant collection of murals crafted by students from Milwaukee Public Schools will be showcased at the Holiday Folk Fair International this weekend. The event, which celebrates its 81st year, will run from November 22 to November 24 at the Exposition Center at Wisconsin State Fair Park.
Since 2022, MPS students have been contributing murals to the fair. The number of participating schools increased to 16 in both 2023 and 2024, up from 12 initially. This year’s artworks are painted on canvas instead of boards, with some pieces finding permanent homes in cultural centers around Milwaukee.
Gina Jorgensen, a visual arts teacher leader, acts as the liaison between the schools and the International Institute of Wisconsin, which organizes the event. She noted that "I can’t even tell you how proud our artists are," highlighting the significance for students when their work is displayed publicly.
The murals align with this year's theme: "Celebrate the Culture of Traditional Art." Students began their creative process in October after receiving materials and guidance from Jorgensen. They explored diverse cultural traditions ranging from Oneida Nation art to Colombian festivals.
In addition to showcasing murals, MPS students will participate in Education Day activities on Friday. Performers include dancers and musicians from several high schools within the district. Attendees can also partake in hands-on activities like weaving and castanet-making led by Jorgensen and her team.
The fair offers free entry for student muralists through wristbands, while family members and others may purchase tickets online or at the venue. The event's public hours are Friday afternoon through Sunday evening.
