The Milwaukee community is set to commemorate the 96th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 20, 2025. The observance will include participation from Milwaukee Public Schools students and teachers who will learn about Dr. King's life, work, and impact throughout the week.

In honor of the federal holiday and Dr. King's legacy, MPS schools and offices will be closed on Monday. Families are encouraged to engage in activities such as participating in celebrations and services, reading books or watching videos about Dr. King's contributions, listening to his speeches, or discussing the Civil Rights Movement. Since 1994, King Day has been recognized as a National Day of Service where Americans volunteer in their communities in tribute to Dr. King's service-oriented life.

Milwaukee's annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration will take place at the Marcus Performing Arts Center on Monday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., marking its 41st year since inception in 1984. Student winners of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Speech and Essay Contests will present their works during this event, which also features artwork by winners of the Art Contest. Admission is free for attendees seeking more information or contest winner details on the Marcus Performing Arts Center website.

Additional family resources can be accessed through The King Center, The Nobel Prize organization, and National Geographic Kids.

The Marcus Performing Arts Center is located at 929 N. Water Street in Milwaukee.
