Deirdre “Dede” Barry was born on October 8, 1972, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She grew up in the city and began figure skating as a child. Barry later took up speed skating and joined the U.S. speed skating team from 1987 to 1991. She competed in world championships during those years. Milwaukee influenced her athletic development. Local races and programs introduced her to cycling. She used cycling as training for skating and eventually focused on it full-time. Barry won six U.S. cycling championships, including four senior and two junior titles. She competed internationally and earned two World Cup victories. Barry also earned two World Championship medals. In 2004, she won a silver medal in the Olympic time trial in Athens. She lived in Milwaukee during her early career and raced in local events, including Superweek. Barry later moved to Toronto but continued to compete and lead in cycling. Her connection to Milwaukee remained important. The city was the foundation for her sports career and early development. She inspired young athletes and represented Milwaukee on national and international stages.
