Milwaukee County officials recently launched a new incentive program set to grant individuals who get vaccines a $100 gift card in an effort to increase the area’s vaccination rates.

"Every vaccine brings us one step closer to the other side of this pandemic,” Milwaukee Health Commissioner Kirstin Johnson said. “We are hopeful that this incentive program will encourage Milwaukee residents to prioritize getting their COVID-19 vaccine."

Made effective earlier this month, everyone who receives the first dose of the vaccine at the Northwest Health Center or Southside Health Center will be eligible for the compensation, the city site states.

All individuals ages 12 and older who are eligible for the vaccine can claim the cash prize. According to city officials, though an ID and health insurance card aren’t required to claim the gift card, children under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian present.

Just over half of Milwaukee County residents, 55.2% have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, which are at similar rates from the total adults who have received at least one dose nationwide, at 67.6% and the 56.3% of Wisconsin residents who have received the dose. According to Becker’s, DHS Wisconsin has the 22nd highest vaccination rate in the U.S, DHS reports.
