Milwaukee Public Schools issued the following announcement on June 14.
The home of Flag Day is only about 35 miles from Milwaukee in the tiny town of Waubeka, Wisconsin. Although home to less than 1,000 people, Waubeka’s claim to fame is Flag Day. Beginning around 1885, local teacher Bernard Cigrand spent years petitioning Congress to formally acknowledge a day to honor the United States flag.
Flag Day was not made official until President Woodrow Wilson formally established the observance in 1916. Several people in addition to Cigrand are credited with trying to get Flag Day formalized, but Cigrand’s name appears prominently among the history of the event.
