Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson is excited by the possibilities.
“We are one step closer to winning the 2024 @GOP convention for our city,” Johnson said in a tweet June 1. “I have signed the contract framework that was approved 13-0 by our Council today. Local workers in hospitality will benefit, and we will be able to attract more big conventions.”
Leaders across Wisconsin came together in June to pass a vote in favor of a potential contract for hosting the 2024 GOP convention, WTMJ reported. While nothing has been finalized yet, the actions taken by the city showcase it is ready to move forward, including being ready to apply for a $50 million grant to fund the plan.
“My support for this agreement is primarily driven by the benefits hardworking Milwaukee residents will earn when the Republican National Convention comes to our city,” he said. “I also favor this effort because it positions Milwaukee to attract additional big conventions in the coming years.”
Milwaukee has become a place to be for high-profile Republican figures, with former President Donald Trump scheduled to visit the city Aug. 20 as part of the “American Freedom Tour,” according to WTMJ.
Trump will be joined by former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Dinesh D'Souza, and Kimberly Guilfoyle, according to the tour’s website.
